Apart from the upcoming release of FreeFate, we've been extending our relations to other countries and picked up licenses for two indie games from Norway and Finland.

Itras By is the beginning of a journey away from reality as you perceive it with your everyday senses. The means are elements from surrealism; an art movement from the 20’s which tries to portray the life of the subconscious. The method is roleplaying, a game where a group of people together create and partake in a story. The end is to free the thoughts from their usual patterns. The intention is to liberate impulsiveness and creative power, maybe even rendering everyone a slight bit wiser.

Valley of Eternity is a roleplaying game about everyday heroes and fate as an outcast, reserved for those who are in any way different from their fellows. It is a roleplaying game about penguins, inspired by western movies. While Valley of Eternity is not a game about good vs evil, it features a bit of comedy with serious undertones. Designed mostly for one-shot adventures, Valley of Eternity is a good entry-level roleplaying game with a simple setting and deep meaning.

Humans born in the presence of a mystic field—which before the invention of mystic field generators meant they had to be on a planet in a mystic cycle—sometimes belong to a subspecies. The exact appearance of a subspecies depends on the mystical energy field present during gestation, the specific interactions between a human’s genome and the mystic field varying by world. While normal humans may give birth to a member of a subspecies if the pregnancy is carried out in a mystic field, members of a subgroup only bear children of that same subgroup. However, if no mystic energies are present, all children will be born as normal humans.

For Equinox, we wanted to design a dice mechanic that fits a cinematic play style with a solid set of mechanics—not too rules-light, but not too rules-heavy. It took us many iterations and tinkering to finally arrive at the system we use now, which is one we are quite proud and fond of.

Before we get into the system proper, some of the process and sources of inspiration might be of interest as well. With Vagrant Workshop’s history with Earthdawn Third Edition, we initially started off using a variant of the Step System. This worked well enough to get us through an initial playtesting round, but showed that some of the tweaks we wanted specifically for Equinox didn’t quite work out. One of the solutions was dropping the idea of using the full range of die types, which eventually led us to a simpler system using only good ‘ol six-sided dice. We designed that one from scratch, focusing on the elements we wanted in the game. However, something was missing.

We've been offline for a few long weeks, and are now finally back with a brand-new website! Let us introduce ourselves, the Vagrant Workshop. We're a small group of independent game designers driven by dedication to quality. We trust in our products and enjoy great designs, both mechanically and visually. Our main way of publishing books is DriveThruRPG, where we offer high-quality print and PDF books (okay, just one printed book at the moment, but we're working on more!).

Our Pro-Indie line of games has been around for quite a while and is available in English as well as in German. The latest addition to that line is BARBAREN! - The Ultimate Macho Roleplaying Game, a tongue-in-cheek approach to fantasy gaming (best read with Arnold Schwarzenegger's heavy accent in mind). The next game coming up is Vampire City, a gamemasterless roleplaying game focusing on those ever-popular creatures of the night. Vampire City is a truly collaborative experience--a chance for players to build a compelling story together, even while pursuing contrary interests!

Another major game line we are working on is Equinox. A future fantasy game of stunning action, frightening intrigue, and mystical powers, Equinox is set in a war-ravaged dark future. We've been working on this game on and off for a few years already, and it is slowly nearing completion. To sweeten the wait for this game, we'll run a few articles about the game and talk about it in our new forums. While we'll likely miss our target to release the game at GenCon 2012, we intend to keep you up-to date about the development process.

So, welcome to our new place! The new year comes with a lot of work attached--and we're on it!
